Does your tooth filling frequently breaks? And does it have to be replaced very frequently?

Let’s Discuss some of the commonly used fillings and some which are not known to many people.

Amalgam filling:

These are the traditional filling materials which are not teeth colored.

There is a lot of controversy regarding use of amalgam as it contains mercury.

But there fillings does not cause any harm to the body and is approved by ADA.

These fillings may sometimes stay in place for 20-30 years in some patients.

Direct filling gold:

This is also a highly successful filling material made of pure gold foil.

This is highly compatible with tooth and body and it can last for very long.

This can result in golD teeth in your mouth and is expensive as it’s done in gold.

Glass Ionomer cement:

GLASS IONOMER FILLING

These are the normal white cements used to fill cavity and there can be fracture and need to be repeated at least once in one or two years.

But this filling contains fluoride and can control tooth decay

Composite:

COMPOSITE FILLING

These are stronger fillings and are tooth colored and not very white like cements.

They are cured by a UV light and they stay for longer duration.

Inlay/Onlay:

Tooth inlay

The previous fillings are all dine by dentist in the mouth.

These inlays/onlays are fabricated in the lab and they are made of hard ceramic and these are cemented/bonded onto the tooth cavity.

These fillings may be matched exactly to tooth and may appear expensive, but when considered long term, these are actually cheap as they don’t have to be repeated every now and then.
